Rutgers Wellness Tips

“Wellness is an ongoing practice — it requires consistent planning, intentional action, and regular attention to truly support long-term health and well-being. "

Be Proactive:

Mental health is not just something to focus on in a crisis. CAPS holds constant wellness workshops, psychiatric counseling, drug assistance programs and more. Learn about available resources for mental health here.

Get Involved:

College can feel isolating, and one can think everyone else has it all figured out. Joining clubs, working, volunteering, attending events, are a great way to connect with like-minded people.

Take a Break:

Take a daily break to breathe, dance, walk, lift, or enjoy a hobby — anything that makes you happy. Breaks help you reset and stay present, and even a few moments of deep breathing can have a calming effect on your body.

Develop a plan:

Everything works best with a plan you can commit to. Schedule time for physical activity, studying, socializing, and even moments to be alone — balance comes from intentional planning.

Talk it out:

Connecting with others reminds you that you are part of something larger than yourself. Communication encourages healthy emotional expression rather than bottling up feelings.

Maintain your Physical Health:

Eat Well: Aim to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and protein. The nutrients can boost your mood, improve focus, and help clear brain fog.

Exercise: Meet the physical Activity Guidelines: Meeting the guidelines — about 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week, plus strength training twice a week — helps you live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life.

Sleep Well: Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep per night. Less than 7 hours on a regular basis can lead to lower energy, trouble concentrating, mood changes, and a weaker immune system.

Prioritize Personal Safety and Care:

Whether it is practicing safe sex, making sure to eat before drinking, or taking a self-defense class- important to protect yourself so you can feel your best.
