Reflections on GO Outdoors: A Memorable Sunset Kayaking Trip By Nicole Sensenbach

Rutgers University Students Go Outdoors on the Sunset Kayaking Trip on the Raritan River

On May 1st, I had the chance to join the Sunset Kayaking trip with GO Outdoors, and I wanted to share how much I appreciated the experience. This wasn’t my first GO Outdoors trip, but it stood out to me in the best way—and that’s largely due to the incredible staff.

Trip Faciliators Alex, Emma, Eli, and Corbin were not only professional and welcoming, but they were also incredibly patient with first-time kayakers like me. I especially noticed the way they kept checking in with participants in the back of the group and made sure everyone felt comfortable and supported. Despite most of us having never met before, they helped build a genuine sense of camaraderie among the group.

As someone who can feel a bit awkward in new social situations, I was grateful for the way the trip leaders made space for friendly conversation, even before the program officially started. Their thoughtfulness made a real difference in how comfortable I felt throughout the experience.

Even beyond this particular trip, I’ve had positive experiences with the GO Outdoors staff. Last month, a trip to the Catskills was canceled due to weather. When I went to Base Camp to borrow gear, Lois took the time to walk me through different equipment options and patiently answered all my questions. Later, she followed up with a kind and informative email explaining the cancellation and letting me know about next steps.

Every staff member I’ve met through GO Outdoors has been kind, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the outdoors. They consistently go above and beyond to make sure each trip is enjoyable and memorable. Judging by the group photo below, I’m sure others feel the same way.

As I approach graduation, I’m hoping to join a few more trips this summer. I know these experiences will be among the highlights of my time at Rutgers. GO Outdoors deserves much more recognition among students, faculty, and staff—it’s a true gem of this community.
