Join our community on how to get started taking Fitness & Wellness classes at Rutgers Recreation.

  1.  Check out the daily schedule.

The schedule for fitness and wellness classes will continually be updated. Make sure to double-check the location and time of the class. There are classes scheduled every day of the week at all four campuses. You can find the schedule at  https://go.rutgers.edu/classschedule and https://recreation.rutgers.edu/rurec2go.

  1. Find a class that interests you.

Review the class descriptions.  If you press on the class schedule in the RUREC2GO app, you will see a description of the class and the equipment to be used in class.  There are plenty of courses to choose from, such as Yoga, Spinning™, Pilates, and BODYPUMP™.

  1. Be ok with trying something new.

There are new participants in class every day.  Our instructors will always provide options for various fitness levels and experiences. All participants will be encouraged to go at their own pace and comfort level. We love first-time participants!

  1. Be on time

Arrive for class 10-15 minutes before the start time. No pre-registration is available, so all classes are first come/first served.  Classes are accessible to all recreation center members, including students.  Class size may be limited due to the availability of room and equipment.

  1. Dress for comfort

Dress in comfortable clothing with layers.  Some class spaces can be warm and colder than you would prefer.  Sneakers are to be worn for most strength and cardio classes, such as RU Strength or Zumba™. Some classes, such as yoga or Pilates, may encourage bare or socked feet.

  1. Hydrate and nourish

Before a fitness class, drink enough water throughout the day and eat a healthy meal or snack a few hours before your workout class. There are refill stations located in all the recreation facilities.

  1. Be with others

Come to class, and you will be part of a welcoming community. We encourage you to set your cell phone aside and be present in the moment to enjoy the class experience.  We would love for you to bring friends, yet group fitness is a great place to make new friends.

  1.  Meet the Physical Activity Guidelines

These guidelines encourage the amount of recommended activity per week that improves physical and mental health. Get 150 minutes of moderate physical activity and 75 minutes of high-intensity activity, or a combination of both.  Choose classes such as SPINNING™, ZUMBA, and BODYCOMBAT™. The other recommendation is muscular conditioning, which should be done twice weekly. This includes courses such as BODYPUMP™, Ru Strength, Yoga, and Pilates.
