- All members and guests of our facilities are expected to follow all Federal, State, and Rutgers University policies, rules and regulations as well as those stated in the Code of Student Conduct Section VII.
- All injuries and equipment issues are to be reported to staff immediately.
- Facility Access
- All users must check in and out with their valid, university-issued Rutgers ID cards through officially designated entry and exit points.
- As a courtesy, in the case that an individual does not have their physical ID card, they will be permitted to enter using their NetID up to (3) times per semester.
- For a person who has been looked up 3 times, on subsequent visits a valid university issued ID must be presented.
- Members may sponsor up to three guests per day with guest pass purchases at $10 per guest, per day.
- Guests must be 18+ years of age and show photo identification that includes a date of birth.
- Guest passes are non-transferable.
- Guests must enter and exit the facilities with their sponsoring member. The member shares the responsibility for the guests’ behavior.
- Members may not accept solicitation requests to sponsor guests.
- Animals, except for service animals are prohibited.
- Bicycles, scooters, mopeds, roller blades/skates, skateboards, and shoes with built-in wheels are prohibited inside any facilities.

- Attire and Hygiene
- Attire that includes a top and a bottom are required in all indoor public spaces
- All participants are to follow good hand-washing hygiene, covering all wounds, and clean equipment and mats after use.
- Bare or socked feet and open-toed shoes are prohibited in any areas and/or
activities that include weights such as fitness centers, power gyms and studios except during instructional classes such as Yoga or Pilates. - Metal cleats are prohibited in all indoor and outdoor spaces.
- General Conduct
The following are prohibited:
- Distracting behavior and loud noises including dropping weights, offensive
language yelling, taunting, and grunting. - Music played so others could hear.
- Headphones must be used while listening to personal music in all shared
spaces. - Music labeled as explicit is not to be played out loud, even during pre-
approved reservations.

- Saving equipment or space for another participant who has not arrived.
- Phone conversations in shared spaces where others can hear, such as fitness centers and locker rooms.
- Be mindful that personal photos and/or video do not include other users.
- Use of cameras and video equipment without prior approval.
- The use of personal audio or visual recording devices, including a cell phone camera, in changing areas, restrooms or locker rooms.
- Food in any activity space.
- Equipment removal from designated rooms such as the fitness center, MPR’s
(multipurpose rooms) or fitness studios. - Abuse and/or misuse of any equipment.
- No glass of any kind is allowed in locker rooms and aquatic areas. Drinks must be kept in a sealed, non-glass container.
- The blocking of hallways, pathways or emergency exits with personal belongings or activities that restrict movement through those areas by other patrons.
- Pouring any liquids onto the heating elements in the sauna.

- Participants may bring personal locks to secure belongings. Locks are also
available for daily use at no charge from the front desk(s) - Rutgers Recreation is not responsible for damaged, lost or stolen personal property.
- Personal items left behind are brought to the front desk of the facility, stored and discarded/donated after 7 days. Exceptions to this include items that are considered valuable such as cash, jewelry, phones/tablets/laptops, government-issued ID cards, which will be processed according to the University’s lost and found policy.
- All items of value are to be locked in a secure locker.
- All loaned items must be returned before leaving the facility.
- Audio/Visual equipment use is limited to recreation programs and approved
reservations.
- Participants may bring personal locks to secure belongings. Locks are also
- Locker Rooms and Restrooms
- According to New Jersey’s nondiscrimination law, individuals may use restrooms and locker rooms according to their gender identities. Single use restrooms and family changing areas are available at College Ave Gym. Family Changing areas are available at Cook Recreation Centers and single use locker rooms are available at Werblin Recreation Center.
- All daily lockers must be vacated at the close of each day. Any locks remaining on daily lockers at the end of the day are subject to being cut off at the owner’s expense.
- Items in lockers will be tagged and held for two weeks; however, Rutgers Recreation will not be responsible for items retrieved from lockers where locks have been removed.
- All issued lockers must be cleaned out at the end of the academic year for regular maintenance and cleaning.
- Sauna users should shower prior to using the sauna and use a towel to cover their seat. Pouring any liquids onto the heating elements in the sauna is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action. Limit sessions to 15-20 minutes, especially for beginners, and ensure adequate hydration before, during, and after. Monitor your body's response and exit if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or uncomfortable. It is also crucial to consult with a doctor before using a sauna if you have any underlying health conditions.
- Rentals and Reservations
- Exclusive use of spaces is limited to approved reservation requests.
- Facility reservations are available to registered Rutgers Student
Organizations, Rutgers Departments, and External Organizations. Rental
fees, equipment fees, and staffing fees may apply.
- Facility reservations are available to registered Rutgers Student
- Use of facilities for paid instructional, training, or coaching purposes is limited to approved reservations with all reservation parameters and payments fulfilled.
- Event attendees are restricted to the designated event area.
- Field use is for Rutgers affiliates only. Organized groups must have a reservation.
- Exclusive use of spaces is limited to approved reservation requests.
- Marketing
- All marketing must be approved. Advertising at any Recreation Facility does not constitute an endorsement or guarantee of any product, service, or information.

- Only digital advertising will be accepted. No posting/signage may be secured
to walls of Recreation Facilities, doors, windows, stairwells, or hallways. - Items posted or distributed outside of approved locations will be removed
and discarded.

- Fitness/Wellness Spaces and Programs
- Barbell deadlifting may only be performed in racks and/or platforms.
- Olympic lifts (snatch, clean & jerk and other variations) are not permitted in the main fitness centers. Appropriate flooring, bars, and plates for
Olympic lifts is available at the College Ave Gym and the Sonny Werblin
Recreation Center - Patrons should rerack all weights, plates and fitness accessories, and all items are to be returned to their original location.
- MPR’s (Multipurpose rooms), power gyms and fitness studios are
unavailable for open recreation use 15 minutes prior to and during
reserved programming times. Users who are not program participants
may not enter, use the space, or remove equipment during this time. - Collar usage and spotters are strongly recommended during free weight
use. - Equipment is to be shared:
- Limit rest time and allow others to work in between sets.
- Be considerate, limit your time on all equipment when others are waiting
- Super setting is to be avoided when using two pieces of equipment while others are waiting.
- Limit dumbbell use to 1 pair
- Use of cardio equipment is limited to 45 minutes when others are waiting.
- Use of strength equipment such as squat racks, platforms and cable units is limited to 30 minutes when others are waiting.
- Be respectful of others in all first come/first served programming
- Be mindful of others' personal space when setting up equipment and selecting a space in class. Avoid selecting a space that blocks another user from seeing themselves in the mirror.
- If assistance is needed, please arrive early and speak with the instructor before the class starts.
- Arrive for class 10 minutes prior to the start time and avoid entering a class once it has begun.
All users are strongly encouraged to seek advice from a physician and a certified exercise professional before starting a new exercise program. It is the user's personal responsibility to limit activities, choose modifications, and select appropriate weights.
- Aquatic Spaces and Programs
- All users must shower before entering the water.
- Running is not permitted on the pool deck.
- Throwing bathers, allowing them to dive from shoulders or knees, dunking, and chicken fighting are not permitted. Patrons may not have others sitting on their shoulders.
- Diving is only permitted in designated areas.
- Be courteous of others while lane swimming:
- Swimmers are expected to share a lane and circle swim when there are more than two people in a lane.
- Swim with others of your own pace
- Avoid diving into the lanes
- Swim in a COUNTERCLOCKWISE direction staying to the right of the
lane - Pass only when the passing lane is clear
- Move to the extreme right corners of the lane if stopping for a moment
- Avoid congregating at the end walls or hanging on the lane lines
- Be considerate of others particularly when using hand paddles, or fins
to avoid injury to other swimmers
- Rockwall
- Only patrons who have been belay-certified by Recreation staff may belay
others. Certification is valid for one academic year. Rec staff are available to
belay others on a first come/first served basis. - When bouldering or traversing, no patron may utilize foot holds above the designated “bouldering line” on the wall.
- All belaying activities must utilize the Recreation belay station equipment located at the base of each climbing station.
- Only patrons who have been belay-certified by Recreation staff may belay
- Intramural Sports
- All participants must bring their valid RUID to participate.
- Teams must be ready to play before the start time. If a team shows up 5
minutes after the start time it will be declared a forfeit. - A participant may not play in two like divisions.
- Participants must have played in at least two games to be eligible for the playoffs.
- If a team forfeits two games, they will be dropped from further competition in
that sport. - Intramural staff will determine what equipment may or may not be used during the contest or event.
- All contests are governed by the NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational
Sports Association) or designated high school/amateur rules for that sport
except as modified by Intramural Sports Revisions. Teams are responsible
for the knowledge of the rules and rule changes set by the Intramural Sports
Department. - Any participant wearing eyeglasses or other eyewear may be required to
wear a safety strap, especially if the eyewear is deemed unsafe during play. - Jewelry of any kind must be removed. Placing tape over jewelry will not be
allowed.
