SWIMMING

There’s something for everyone in the Rutgers Recreation New Horizons Learn to Swim program. Seven levels of instruction are designed to help swimmers of all ages develop and refine their skills. Authorized Red Cross Water Safety Instructors teach a variety of strokes, including front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly.

Children between the ages of 3-12 are invited to join us in a program that guarantees they will learn new and exciting skills. All classes are designed to help students learn to swim or to improve their swimming skills with new strokes, stroke refinements, diving safety tips and techniques, and more. Instruction in swimming and water safety is complimented by games to provide a positive experience in the water. Expose your children to the excitement of water activities for life-long enjoyment.

Our instructors offer a fun, exciting and safe program so that your child can learn (or improve) in some great recreational activities.

Our most popular program, swim, offers the following: swim lessons for ages 5-12, pre-school swim lessons for ages 3-5 and Pre-Competitive Swim Training for ages 8-15.

Classes are generally run in six-week sessions. You may sign up for any combination of classes and we encourage you to register for both sessions at the same time. Many classes fill up early. Space is limited.

Prior to attending your first class please print and fill out the waiver below and bring to class.

New Horizons Parent Guidelines

SUPERVISION
Parents must accompany their children into and out of the facility. During the swimming lesson, parents must remain in the designated waiting areas and observe their child’s lesson from a nondistracting distance. Parents will accompany their child anytime they need to use the locker rooms or family changing areas.

CHANGING ON DECK
Changing your child on pool deck is strictly prohibited at any of the Rutgers Recreation facilities. Please use one of the locker rooms or family changing areas to change and/or shower your child.

FAMILY CHANGING AREAS
There are several private changing areas located on either side of the College Avenue Pool and at the far end of the Cook/Douglass pool deck.

LOCKER ROOMS
There are men and women’s locker rooms for restroom and changing needs. Mothers with daughters or fathers with sons should use the locker rooms to prevent crowding of the family changing areas. It is strictly prohibited for children to enter the locker room that doesn’t correspond with their gender. Instead, these patrons should use the family changing areas provided.

SEATING
Parents may sit on the metal benches along the wall at the College Avenue Pool or in the chairs provided at the Cook Douglass facility.

Parking:Parking is available in lot 76, located across the street (Dudley Road) for Cook patrons, or in lot 30 for College Avenue patrons. Patrons of New Horizons’ are not permitted to park here at any time.

All children should be encouraged to use the facilities prior to class starting and/or should be placed in clean unsoiled swim diaper prior to the class starting. Should your child soil their diaper during the class, they should immediately be removed from the pool and changed to prevent pool contamination.

ROCK CLIMBING

Start your child on a new adventure. Register them for Indoor Rock Climbing. The sheer verticals, sculpted bulges and horizontal overhangs of our 80’ X 25’ wall will challenge them all the way to the top. They’ll be having fun as well as increasing balance, body awareness and both mental and physical strength. Classes are taught with a 1:5 instructor to student ratio. For ages 7 to 13.

What if my child gets sick during lessons?
It is our policy that if a child gets sick or injured during a lesson, he/she will be asked to sit out for the rest of the class. Illness or injury includes vomiting or nosebleed. We do this to keep the pool safe for our instructors and the other students. We understand that accidents happen and we ask that you let your child observe the rest of the lesson from outside of the pool to prevent any further accidents for the day.

When will the brochure be out?
The brochure is published three times a year: late July (for classes beginning in September), early December (for classes beginning in late January), and in late April (for classes beginning in late June).

When can I register?
Registration for Fall New Horizons begins in mid-August, registration for Spring Hew Horizons takes place in mid-December and registration for Summer New Horizons takes place in mid-May.

What happens if a student misses a class?
Unfortunately, we cannot offer make up classes. We hold multiple classes on multiple days and have found it improbable to offer make up classes for individuals who miss a class.

What happens if Rutgers cancels a class?
Whenever possible, we will try to offer a make up class for classes cancelled due to inclement weather. However, we are not always able to do this in all cases. When we can’t offer a make up class, we would issue partial refunds for the cancelled class.

Why isn’t there a discount for Rutgers employees?
This program is not subsidized by Rutgers in any way. We receive no funding from any agency, organization or grant. Therefore we can not offer discounts to Rutgers employees.

What happens if the swim class is cancelled due to lightning?
First Instance: The instructor will conduct a safety lesson on deck.
Second Instance: Five minutes will be added to the end of the remaining lessons in the session.
All Remaining Instances: A proportionate refund will be returned to each participant.
